One Path to the American Dream
Making a Better Mop
A single mother of three, Joy had an idea about how to make her life just a little easier. A mop? Yes, a mop! A super-absorbent cotton mop that would be self wringing so she didn’t have to touch the dirty water with her hands. Seemed simple enough, but it didn’t exist, and Joy was convinced that it should. Because she thought it would matter to women who felt like they didn’t have enough time in the day to take care of their homes and families. Women like her.
Finding Her Voice
All of the “industry” people said it was too expensive, and that women didn’t really need a better way to mop. But Joy thought a little differently. So she packed her mop, a bucket, a piece of her kitchen floor and her children, and she set out to show people what a mop “could” be. She spoke with anyone who would listen. Parking lots? Check. Boat shows? Check. A television camera? Check. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Building the Business
And away she went. With success of the Miracle Mop, Joy moved the company out of her father’s garage and into their very first office. And it seemed everywhere she looked, she saw a way to make life a little bit better. Junk drawer nightmare? The Rolykit was the roll up case that kept things in place. Orphaned earrings? The Jewel Kit rolled to organize, but with a flocked interior to protect the most valuable valuables. Crumbled cupcakes in crumpled shirt boxes? The Piatto Bakery Box fit 24 classroom treats, and folded up to under an inch wide. All of these products went on to earn the Good Housekeeping Seal.
Reinventing the Closet
Like most women, Joy’s mornings required a trip into her closet, where she tangled with wire hangers, crumpled clothes one too many stretchy shoulder bumps. So she set out to change all that. She took the velvety-soft flocking from her previous products and applied it to an ultra slim, softly curved, purposefully designed hanger. The result was nothing less than a phenomenon. There are now over 700,000,000 Huggable Hangers in homes across America.
Taking the Leap
Vaunted television executive Barry DIller had first met Joy at the beginning of her inventing career, when she first began appearing on TV for his company. With bigger ambitions, Barry purchased HSN, a television shopping network that he wanted to transform into something bigger. Incredibly, Diller’s team asked Joy to bring her company with him to HSN. Joy said yes, and started an amazing partnership that still lasts to this very day. HSN is now a leading content-based omnichannel retailer, and Joy is one of its most beloved brands. LEARN MORE
Success in Steam
First mopping, then organizing, then closets. Of course she would find a way to make ironing better. And she did it, by eliminating it altogether! Inspired by the large and industrial steaming techniques of her neighborhood dry cleaner, Joy set out to create the most powerful portable steamer on the market, aptly called “My Little Steamer”. This little powerhouse quickly became America’s favorite non-iron, and continues to lead the industry in style and substance, making that morning grind just a little less grind-y.
All in the Family
2005 marked a very special year for Joy. It marked the time at which her oldest daughter, Christie, joined the family company as a product developer. A dream come true for Joy, Christie quickly climbed the ranks, and now works hand in hand with Joy creating products that they know will make women’s lives a little better and a little brighter. Who knew that, further down the line, her youngest daughter Jackie would have her television career bring her to HSN, and her son Bobby would leave the legal world to help guide the company to even new heights. A true family business, with the love and value that match.
Fresh is in the Air
Sitting in New York City with Givaudan, the world’s largest flavor and fragrance house, Joy was handed a plant-based plastic pebble infused with a fragrance they were discussing. Joy asked why plastic, and they said it was because it lasted longer. How long, she asked? Two years, they said. What shapes, she asked. Any shape, they said. Could it include odor elimination technology, she asked. And, at that, Forever Fragrant was born. Combining designer fragrances with powerful odor elimination that lasts for up to 2 years, Joy’s Forever Fragrant products broke the all time record for sales on HSN.
Perfecting the Pillow
Mops? Check. Closets? Check. Wrinkles? Check. Fresh air? That too. Time to rest? Not exactly. Instead, Joy turned her sights to her pillow, imagining what it could be. And boy, she figured out what it should be. Clusters of memory foam to provide support while still being squeezable. Carefully selected materials to keep one side cool and the other side cozy and warm. And colors, oh the colors! These pillows reinvented the category, becoming the best selling launch in the history of Joy’s career. LEARN MORE
Joy Meets World
On Christmas day of 2015, Joy’s own American dream is launched into the world in the major motion picture JOY. Written by David O. Russell and starring Jennifer Lawrence as Joy, this project first began nearly ten years ago, when a brilliant producer in Hollywood met Joy, had dinner with her, and told her that one day he would make her story into a movie. She laughed and thanked him, thinking that it was a very nice compliment and nothing more. Little did she know that they would become the best of friends, and that the idea at that dinner would blossom into a tale that we all hope does its part to inspire America to bravely reach for their own dreams.
